This evergreen shrub has dark green, leathery, holly-like leaves. But it is the flowers of Garrya elliptica that are the main attraction. During the winter months long, silky, tassle-like catkins are produced consisting of small silvery-green flowers. Each tassle is up to 20cm long on male plants. On female plants the tassles are shorter but they are followed by a string of purple berries.
