Aquilegia are grown for their attractive bell-shaped pendulous flowers that are produced in late spring and early summer. There are many hybrids and cultivars. There are a wide range of flower colours including purple, yellow, pink, white and red. Some cultivars have bi-coloured flowers.
The flowers are produced on upright flower stalks which range in height between 30cm and 75cm. If you allow Aquilegia to self-seed around the garden they will cross and surprise you with a display of varying new shades annually. Aquilegia have greenish-blue lobed basal leaves.
Some cultivars have variegated leaves.
