Schools from across Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and Caerphilly are invited to enter, with wheelbarrows provided free of charge and youngsters have a free rein over design and content. Cardiff Council Executive Member for Sport Leisure and Culture, Councillor Nigel Howells said: “We are over subscribed this year with a record 75 wheelbarrows on display, and that is a fantastic reflection of the interest school children have in growing and being creative in the garden. The Schools wheelbarrows are such a popular feature at the RHS Show, and they help to get our youngsters to appreciate horticulture from an early age.”

Last April over 24,000 visitors from across the UK enjoyed the best of the spring blooms from nurseries across the UK, with ideas and inspiration for the growing season ahead, all gathered under blue skies.

One of the key features of the show was the Schools Wheelbarrow competition supported by Legal & General, which attracted over 4,000 public votes over the weekend. Cardiff’s Millbank Primary School was declared the winner with a recycling theme, and Head Teacher Gail Allen said: “It was fantastic to win last year, the children who worked on the wheelbarrow were absolutely thrilled. We’ve already entered for this year, our Green Gang eco group has some ideas on our theme and they will decide on how we try to regain our title.”

The annual RHS Show Cardiff is now in its seventh year, and this spring it will take up even more space behind the castle, featuring:

• Craft Village
• Cafe Quarter
• Food Hall
• Nature trails
• Street entertainers
• Live music on the bandstand

RHS Shows Director Stephen Bennett said: “Last year’s Cardiff show brought record numbers to these beautiful parklands. The RHS loves the Cardiff event, it’s our first outdoor show of the season, and one of the most attractive features for us is the wheelbarrows and the tremendous effort and imagination put in by local schools.”
