Scented, near-black semi-double flowers that grow up to 15cm across create a spectacular display. They appear in late spring and early summer above the handsome deeply cut dark green leaves. A majestic tree peony that is an important source of colour in the period after spring bulbs have finished flowering, but the roses are not yet in bloom.

  • Garden care: Deadhead after flowering. In early spring apply a top-dressing of a balanced slow release fertiliser around the base of the plant and mulch well with well rotted garden compost or manure. The older stems of tree peonies have a tendency to become brittle and snap so cut these back to the ground in autumn every two or three years.
