Foxgloves can be classed as perennials but it is more common for them to be grown as biennials. They can be found growing wild throughout Europe, especially in woodland areas. Digitalis purpurea has large, broad, lance-shaped leaves. The flowers are produced on tall spikes, each flower is cylinder shaped and there are usually distinctive spots on the inside of the cylinder. Flower colour can be purple, pink or white and the flowering period is during summer. Digitalis purpurea self-seeds freely.
