Large fluffy sprays of rosy-lavender or white flowers on striking reddish-brown stems above clumps of fern-like grey-green leaves. This versatile perennial is perfect for the back of a border in partial shade the dainty foliage and flowers provide an excellent contrast with coarser-leaved tall plants.

  • Garden care: Stake using ring stakes or brush-wood before the flowers appear. Cut back the stems after flowering. Add a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the plant in spring. Lift and divide congested plants in spring.

  • Goes well with: Digitalis purpurea f. albiflora, Eryngium variifolium, Echinacea purpurea, Veronicastrum virginicum f. album, Monarda didyma, Aconitum 'Bressingham Spire'.
