The new shoots of this handsome German cultivar bear rich browny-purple foliage which slowly fades to the more familiar green as it matures. Although the plant is quite tolerant of shade this distinctive colouring is more evident when the plant is grown in a sunny spot. In early summer the arching stems (which are now clothed in green leaves) carry pendulous green-tipped white flowers that look like small bells. This elegant perennial will add texture and structure to a mixed or herbaceous border or pot it up and sit it on a sunny patio.

  • Garden care: Polygonatum do not like dry soil. Cut the plant down to the ground in autumn. Lift and divide large colonies in early spring taking care not to damage the young shoots. Apply a mulch of well-rotted leafmould or garden compost in spring.
