Legends  from the Victorian era say that daffodils originated as the brightest stars in heaven and when an angel saw a selfless deed on earth they would pluck one of these stars and place it down on the earth. Plant these in bold swathes and you can create your very own carpet of stars. This is an exquisitely formed American bred flower with a big white disc flower that has slightly windswept-looking petals and a red and orange banded green eyed central cup. An added bonus is its spicy scent.

  • Garden care: Plant 10-15cm (4-6in) deep from late summer to early autumn. After flowering feed with a balanced fertiliser dead-head and allow the leaves to die back naturally.
