Hibiscus syriacus ‘Bluebird’ and the other syriacus cultivars are all deciduous shrubs. They have an upright habit making them ideal for the smaller garden if vertical space is not limited. As the name suggests, the flowers of Hibiscus syriacus ‘Bluebird’ are vivid blue with a maroon centre, blooming from late July, throughout August and into September. The flowers are large saucer-shaped and about 8cm in diameter. They will close up during periods of rain.

The distinctive pretty leaves are bright green with three lobes.

Flowering is most prolific in full sun and if some shelter from strong winds can be provided.

Garden Care: To encourage a bushy habit prune young plants hard in late spring. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Little or no pruning is needed when established except to remove dead or diseased branches in late winter or early spring. In colder areas shrubs might need a winter mulch.
