Propagating Hellebores

Postby Monica » 26 Mar 2011 20:31

Hello,

One of my favourite groups of plants at this time of year are the Hellebores. We have white, pink and nearly black varieties in our garden. We plan to move house next year, I'd like to take some with me to my new smaller garden. What is the best way to propagate Hellebores? Any advice much appreciated.

Hello Monica,

Helleborus hybridize freely. You will often find hellebore seedlings around the base of the parent. You can pot these up and grow them on but they probably won't have the same colour flowers as the parent. If you particularly like the flowers of the parent, it is best to divide the plant immediately after flowering to retain the same flower colour.
