re-use of compost in pots

Postby glynis.broome » 22 Feb 2009 02:14

Can you advise - I garden in containers. Each year I renew the compost, what can I do to re-use the old compost for veg & flowering plants.

Can I add fertilizer and re- use the compost.

Please advise - Glynis

Hello,

I think I would advise against re-using old compost. I would however put it on the garden to improve the structure of the soil. I think reusing old compost encourages the build up of pests and diseases in compost. I think if you were to use the old compost, by the time you have purchased the fertiliser to re-nourish the compost there probably won't be much difference in the cost. Purchase peat-free compost if you are concerned about the destruction of the peat bogs.

Thanks for the advice
